Designer Dogs - Labradoodle Dogs

descriptive text

No two dogs from the same litter will have the exact same temperament and other characteristics so all I can give you are generalities and averages. (Same is true for humans!)

What is this?

The American Labradoodle Dogs are a designer dog that is comprised of a purebred Labrador Retriever and a Poodle which come in any of three sizes, influenced by the Poodle.

The American Lab is NOT a breed. This is a mix of two purebreds causing the dog to be called a “hybrid” or “designer dog.”

There are two types of Labredoodle Dogs. The American version as pictured on this page is one, and a completely different dog is the Australian version. The American version is a hybrid.

The Australian version comes from mixed-breed stock and IS a breed.

This dog comes in three sizes because of the Poodle influence in them:

  1. Miniature size. 15 — 25 pounds or 7 — 12kgg.
  2. Medium size: 30 — 45 pounds or 12 — 20kg.
  3. Standard size: 50 — 65 pounds or 23 — 30kg

Lifespans will vary depending on the size you choose. A general guideline is 17 years for the Miniature, 16 for the Medium and 13 — 15 for the Standard.

Colors vary such as cream, apricot, red, chocolate and black.

Take your Lab mix jogging, hiking, camping, picnicking, or boating. Just be sure to include him in your activities.

Labradoodle: Comprehensive Owner's Guide (Kennel Club Books Designer Dog)

Easy to train. Smart. Eager to learn and to please. Show him what you want, follow simple guidelines in this website and he’ll be your perfect companion.

Clicker Training works well. Here’s some info: Clicker Training.

Potty Training

Want to potty train your dog? There are several ways. Crate vs Paper Potty Training which will help you decide and from there you can get all the information you need. Always praise the pup profusely when she goes potty in the RIGHT PLACE so she knows she has done a good thing.

If you have an older dog, take the dog outside every two hours until she gets the idea which door leads to her potty area. Older dogs catch on to the potty or housebreaking pretty fast once they are shown what and where.

Labradoodle Dogs are the combination of two all-time favorite family dogs. Labradors and Poodles are both excellent family choices. Their offspring are smart, fun-loving, affectionate, playful, energetic, lively and want most to be with family and family activities. These dogs excel at swimming.

They are energetic and always glad when you come home. S/he gets along well with children other pets and adults alike and generally other dogs.

The "Doodle" needs a firm, consistent but kind leadership from the whole family. They can take over the house and "run things" their way if not well socialized and dominated by an alpha-dog skilled leader.

If you happen to get one with a separation anxiety problem, that can be dealt with by investing a few hours of work on your part and some "tough love."

Labradoodle Dogs are an “outdoor” hybrid and they love swimming and camping but also need to be “indoors” with their family as any companion dog should be.

Playfulness & Affection

Unknown. Read the profiles for the Labrador Retriever and Poodle parents as an indication.

An indication — both parents are playful, lively and fun to own. The Toy and Miniature sizes are great lap dogs and are quite affectionate.

The Standard version is a working class pooch who is often trained as a guide dog for the blind.

American Labradoodle Living environment

  • Miniature — Apartment, flat, Condo, farm. Backyard not necessary.
  • Medium — Apartment, flat, condo, farm. Prefers a back yard to play fetch and explore in, but not mandatory.
  • Standard — House with a fenced yard is best. Can live in apartments and flats if necessary.

Is an indoor dog (all 3 sizes) but a few hours in the yard are fine.

Energy level?

Moderately high energy. A walk or two daily and a game of fetch will suffice. Great jogging buddy and loves to swim. (“Poodle” is a variation on the word “puddle” and spaniels are major swimmers too,)

This guy loves a day at the beach or lake where he can chase sticks and balls, on land and swim and surf in the sea. He has plenty of energy that must be exercised out each day.

Watch/Guard Dog?

  • Miniature = Good watchdog. Not a guard dog.
  • Medium = Good watchdog. Not a guard dog.
  • Standard = Good watch and guard dog. Will protect family and house but is not vicious enough to stop some intruders unless the “mix” leans heavy toward the Labrador influence.
This dog will bark at intruders and strangers, but does NOT get carried away. He will bark some if left alone with nothing to do.

Shedding & Grooming

This dog is known for it’s silky fleece, wool or hair type coats. The wool and fleece are non-shedding and suitable for allergy sufferers.

The hair coat does shed and must be brushed every few days. They require less grooming than the wool coats that need clipping and grooming and do not shed.

Dog Health Issues

What health or illness problems the American Labradoodle Dogs are prone to depends on the gene pool mix and what percentages the dogs are comprised of between the two breeds of parents.

It could be assumed that common problems like hypothyroidism, eye problems, otitis externa, dog bloat (gastric torsion), diabetes and pancreatitis to name a few illnesses found in either or both parents would show up in this hybrid dog.

There is nothing specific mentioned in the resource books largely because this dog is a true hybrid which means there is no standardization.

This is a "small dog" and as such, requires a family that can lead with kind, persistent dominance. See Alpha Dog for ideas. Small dogs have a way of running the household if they aren't put in a submissive position.

Coloration, appearance, temperament and health will depend on the balance of influence from each parent. That is, if the dog has, say, 80% Labrador and only 20% Poodle in the genes, your dog will be more strongly influenced in the direction of the Bichon for most all traits. A 50% — 50% mix is terribly rare for hybrid / designer dogs.
